Switched On gains traction in competitive schools market

24 August 2017

Securing school maintenance contracts is highly competitive but Switched On is standing out in this area, with three long-term contracts across Canterbury and Wellington.

Managing Director Chris Hughes says that attaining regular education-sector work is a fantastic achievement for the company, which plans to grow further within this market.

“I’m very proud of our team. To secure contracts with schools, your work must be up with the best. On top of this you need to be extremely efficient and have prices on par with the market,” he says.

With a strong background in residential and commercial painting work, Switched On is well-placed to take on large-scale painting projects at schools. Up to five or six tradespeople are usually required and scaffolding work needs to be factored in, as many school buildings are multi-storey. Working in the education sector, all staff also need to be police-vetted.

The business has been providing exterior painting services to Cathedral Grammar and Glentunnel schools for the past seven years and has recently had these contracts renewed.

Dion Stechmann, Principal – Tumuaki at Glentunnel School says that they choose to work with Switched On because the business offers a competitive rate and quality service.

“We enjoy working with Switched On as they are approachable, open to feedback and also communicate well. We know the school will be looked after for the next seven years and this gives us peace of mind.”

Simon Reid, Business Relationship Manager at Switched On says that comments like these are evidence of their team's ability to deliver consistently high-quality work, while remaining flexible to the unique needs of schools.

“The Ministry of Education is an important client for Switched On and we have worked hard to build this relationship. It’s a very competitive market - the timeframes can be incredibly tight - but our team are highly skilled and have a lot of experience in planning logistics for large-scale painting projects,” he says.

Switched On’s Master Painters re-paint one to two buildings a year at each of the Canterbury schools. The work is usually completed during the school holidays, which means the team must work efficiently to get the job done.

Switched On also recently won a 10-year maintenance contract with Wellington Girls’ College. The team’s work so far has included an extensive programme of exterior painting, spread over almost 10 of the school’s blocks.
