LED lighting is leading the way in energy-efficiency, durability, safety and light quality.
There are a number of different options available when it comes to lighting for your home or business. The four most popular lightbulbs available are incandescent (traditional), low voltage or mains halogen, compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), and light-emitting diodes – otherwise known as LEDs.
So why should you choose LEDs over other lighting options?
More energy efficient
For residential use, quality LED bulbs can have a life span of over 25,000 hours, which is around 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs. They also use at least 75% less energy than traditional bulbs. Considering an average household spends up to 5% of its power bill on lighting, switching to LEDs can be one of the fastest ways to cut your power bill. This means that while the initial outlay for LED bulbs may be more than other lighting options, LEDs offer you better value in the long run.
If you have existing CFL or halogen downlights, you will also be losing heat from inside your house, as these types of lights require airflow to prevent overheating and the risk of fire, so cannot be covered by roof insulation. You can replace these types of light fittings with an LED downlight which can be covered completely by insulation, making it more efficient to heat your home.
Reduced fire risk
Incandescent and halogen bulbs release 90% of their energy as heat; LEDs operate at a lower heat, so are much cooler to touch. This reduces the potential risk of overheating and fires, making them a much safer lighting alternative.
Continuing on with the safety note, LEDs are made with epoxy lenses, not glass, and are much more resistant to breakage. They also don’t use a filament, which means they are not as fragile and can withstand jolting better than incandescent light bulbs. Good news for anyone who has got home from the supermarket and found a broken lightbulb or filament before you’ve even made it inside.
Lower environmental impact
CFL lamps contain mercury which can have a negative impact on the environment during disposal. On the other hand, LEDs contain no mercury, can be made from recyclable materials and have a lower carbon footprint to run compared to incandescents. They also have a longer lifespan, which all equals a much smaller environmental impact.
CFL lamps are also being phased out worldwide due to environmental concerns, and General Electric – one of the world’s largest manufacturer of light bulbs – stopped manufacture of CFL’s at the end of 2016.
Replacing your current bulbs or downlights
With LEDs you need to shop for lumen count, instead of the traditional wattage. A lumen is a measure of the amount of brightness of a lightbulb; the higher the lumens, the brighter the bulb.
- To replace a 100 watt (W) incandescent bulb, look for an energy-saving LED bulb that has a lumen count of around 1600
- To replace a 75W bulb, look for an LED bulb with a lumen count of 1100
- To replace a 60W bulb, look for an LED bulb with a lumen count of 800
- To replace a 40W bulb, look for an LED bulb with a lumen count of 450.
